The design concept for this restoration and adaptive re-use of an 1860 structure on the Strand, Galveston, to house offices and an information center for the Galveston Historical Foundation, takes advantage of a structural requirement to distinguish between old and new. Located within a structural frame, required to buttress the end wall of a row of Victorian warehouses, are all the new services such as fire stair, bathrooms and mechanical cores. This new structure serves as a pacemaker for the existing building and allows for its unimpeded restoration.
